Pleasant Valley Elementary School

Week of Sept. 28 - Oct. 2

Message from School Administration

This week was such a fun-filled week for everyone at Pleasant Valley Elementary. Both Mrs. Dowrey and Mr. Roadcap were surprised on Thursday with a celebration of their birthdays this week. Also, we enjoyed seeing all the families in attendance at Smiley's Ice Cream Fundraiser on Thursday evening.

Lastly, the school observed Dolly Day on Friday, which was a huge success with many people wearing pink or shiny colors. Enjoy the weekend as we enter the Fall season!

Celebrating Our Students

Challenge students wearing their thinking caps

Challenge students are faced with many challenging challenges in Challenge class! To assist with generating loads of ideas for the year, they designed and created their own thinking caps! The finished products must fit on their heads, be balanced, stand at least 6 inches tall, and illustrate how 2D paper can become 3D shapes all while utilizing paper engineering techniques!

Huge THANK YOU to Mrs. Miller for providing this challenging opportunity!

PVES PTO Fun Run - October 16

Students will be bringing home information about this Fun Run, scheduled for October 16 in the morning. Our goal is to raise enough funds to pave our track!

Elementary Grades

How a grade is assigned
Cómo se asigna una calificación

How is a grade assigned? Not every assignment affects a grade the same way. In grades K–5, assignments are grouped into three categories:

  • 20% PRACTICE: Practice helps your child learn.
  • 30% PROGRESS: Progress shows growth along the way.
  • 50% PERFORMANCE & PRODUCT: Performance and Product show what your child can do independently.

This week: Review your child's assignments and note the different categories.

Parent Resource

In the latest episode of the RCPS Community Partner Café , RCPS parent Charlie Parrish sits down with Mountain View Elementary instructional coach Michele Hillbert and principal Drew Miller to talk about what grading looks like in elementary school and what families can expect.

They discuss:

  • How different types of assignments contribute to a student's grade
  • What families should look for in PowerSchool
  • What the new grading language in kindergarten through second grade means
  • When a grade may signal that it's time to check in with your child's teacher
  • Why a single grade doesn't always tell the whole story of a student's learning

We encourage families to listen to the conversation, explore the resources available from RCPS, and, most importantly, reach out to your child's teacher or school with questions about your student's progress.

Traffic Pattern at PVES

PVES traffic pattern

Vehicles planning to park in the PVES front parking lot are able to enter through the upper entrance on Early Road. Please make sure to stop at the stop sign and obey traffic laws, as well as school staff who may be directing traffic.

Morning Drop-Off

  1. Please enter through the lower entrance as you have been doing and pull up to the stop sign at the corner to allow more cars to be unloaded.
  2. All traffic will be directed to turn LEFT ONTO THE NEW EXIT after dropping off. If that route becomes backed up, traffic will be directed to use the exit onto Pleasant Valley Road.
  3. Please do not get out of your vehicle. If your child needs assistance unbuckling, do so once you have stopped or please teach your child how to unbuckle.

Afternoon Pick-Up

  1. When forming the afternoon pick-up line, vehicles should continue to create a lane on the right side of the driveway leading up to Pleasant Valley Elementary from the lower entrance off Early Road.
  2. Please do not block the space between the cones at the rear of the school until instructed to pull forward after all alternate school transportation vehicles have left.
  3. An orange cone will be placed directly behind the last car in the right lane as an indicator to know the right lane is full. Once the cone is placed, please form or join the left lane. Do not start a left lane until instructed to do so.
  4. All traffic will be directed to turn LEFT onto the new exit after picking up your child. If that route becomes backed up, traffic will be directed to use the exit onto Pleasant Valley Road.
  5. Please do not exit your vehicle during drop-off or pick-up.

Elementary school cafeterias will no longer sell certain items, such as chips, on a daily basis.

Pricing Information and Purchasing Guidelines

Meal Payment: A student breakfast costs $2.00 and a student lunch costs $3.25. Payments for meals may be made online, or by cash or check at your child's school.

Pay Online with MySchoolBucks

If paying by cash or check, please send payment in an envelope with your child to school with the child's name, grade and PIN number.

Free and Reduced-Price Meal Applications

Forms remain available throughout the school year. Online meal applications may be completed at MySchoolApps and paper applications are available at each school.

In order to qualify for free or reduced-price meals at all RCPS schools, families must submit a free and reduced-price meal application, or qualify automatically through participation in certain programs such as SNAP.

Nutritious Meals

Elementary students are encouraged not to consume carbonated beverages while at school. Energy drinks are not allowed to be consumed by students during school lunches or other times of the day.

Students are welcome to bring a water bottle to school and to refill it as needed from a water fountain. Additionally, packed lunches for students should be healthy and nutritious and should not regularly have commercial fast-food for lunch.

Hello! I am excited about beginning my School Counseling Classroom lessons for the 2026-2027 school year! This year, I will be sharing topics the PVES School Counseling Lessons will focus on each month.

During September, grades 3-5 will focus on what makes a good friend, compromising and solving friendship conflicts. In grades K-2 we will learn about how School Counselors help us and strategies to solve friendship conflicts.
